Since I’ve already crossed the streams, here are some of the images by Yoshitaka Amano from V magazine from Summer 2004. They accompany a story called “The Return of the Thin White Duke” by Neil Gaiman, which was basically this extended Bowie fanfic about how Bowie was the immortal Thin White Duke who was bored as shit with his eternal life, and upon hearing of a fabulous queen (Iman, natch) who beheaded all suitors that failed her tests, figured it was as good a way to die as any, and so sets off on his steel horse towards her kingdom. Seriously, that’s the plot of the entire fanfic.
I do have the actual issue which I bought at the time, but as it’s an oversized magazine and a pain in the ass to scan, I will have to rely on someone else’s scanning work.
I guess if you’re a famous enough artist, at some point in your career, you finally get to have your Bowie fanfiction or fanart PUBLISHED. (Instead of just cribbing heavily from photos of Bowie and other musicians for visual representations of your characters, ahem Lucifer.)
Actually, that sort of is part of the reason I find it oddly difficult to read Sandman; the stories themselves are interesting, but when I look at the art, it’s sort of like reading embarrassing goth bandfic my sister might have written in 1987, and I get sort of thrown out of the proceedings. XD But this is my personal problem.

We’ve gotten to the point in some fandoms where the BNFs are running things. For example: Moff wrote fanfic. Quite a...
See? Not all BNFs leave fandom.
